The University created the Marquis of Samaranch Olympic Chair, in honour of the former President of the International Olympic Committee, in order to contribute to the promotion, development and dissemination of the Olympic movement and its ideals. The main aim is to raise awareness of the Olympic movement as much more than just a matter of sport. With its self-proclaimed raison d’être being to bring peace and unity to the peoples of the world, the Olympic movement is inseparable from the world of education.

The mission of the Chair is to be a cultural focus point where the Olympic spirit is studied, where educational programmes about its philosophical and social ramifications are developed, and where the scientific foundations of the Olympic ideal, whose principles were defined in ancient Greece and then recovered by the contemporary world, can be consolidated.
