About the Chair

Find out all about the chair

Social development is an ongoing process that involves the promotion and improvement of individual and collective living conditions in different areas: health, education, food, work, housing, environment, security, coexistence, etc., leading to social welfare and, ultimately, to quality of life.

The basic principles that will guide the activities of this chair will be the reduction of social inequalities, the promotion of pluralism and social participation, the improvement of the quality (and not only the quantity) of life, the priority for goods and services for collective use, and finally the promotion of innovation and social change.

All societies face, to a greater or lesser degree, problems of unemployment, social fragmentation, inequalities, social exclusion, loneliness, rootlessness, pockets of poverty or health problems. Any country that wishes to progress has the challenge of improving social conditions in all areas, favoring the social inclusion of vulnerable groups and preventing risk situations that may affect individuals or groups.

The Chair for Social Development of the Camilo José Cela University aims to generate awareness, training, research and participation strategies for the promotion of Development and Social Welfare.

Mission:

To create, research, transmit and disseminate relevant knowledge on collective social development and social welfare.

Vision:

To be a reference for Camilo José Cela University at state and international level, in the promotion of social development and social welfare.

Areas of interest

The following are the areas of interest of this chair

Social Development requires a very elaborate interdisciplinary collaboration, so collaboration between the following academic and social intervention areas will be encouraged: Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Social Psychology, Psychology, Communication, Education, Social Work and Demography, and in general all the Social Sciences.

Specifically, special attention will be given to the following areas:

Social entrepreneurship and social and labor market insertion.

Social development is closely related to economic development. The European 2020 strategy recognizes the central importance of entrepreneurship and self-employment in achieving smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.

Health Education

  • Health promotion is a fundamental strategy that seeks to enable individuals and groups to achieve physical, psychological and social wellbeing through actions that improve the determinants of health, such as healthy lifestyles and environments.
  • A good and correct diet is essential to maintain good health, so training in this area will be encouraged.
  • For similar reasons, the training and practice of sports and other artistic activities based on movement will be encouraged.

Social protection

  • Community Social Intervention has a vast and extensive history of services to society, where it is innovating and opening new work challenges to provide an increasingly faster and more effective response to the citizens who need it most. However, many of the services offered, the programs developed and the professionals working in them are not well known. In short, they do not have sufficient visibility, nor the support for continuous training and research that would allow them to develop over time.
  • Groups at risk or vulnerable. The society of the acceleration of change induces its citizens to live in a permanent process of adaptation and readjustment to face the challenges of living in a constantly changing scenario. These are complex circumstances and citizens do not always have the capabilities and skills to cope in such a changing environment. These conditions increase the vulnerability of people and groups at risk of exclusion: minors, young people, the elderly, women, families, the unemployed, people with disabilities, the marginalized and socially excluded, immigrants, etc.
